Had the same problem. Fixed it myself with
$ sudo update-alternatives --set xdvi.bin /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin

I just wanted to say that I'm seeing the exact same behaviour under
Gutsy (dist-upgraded from Feisty). On my Debian Testing PC, however,
/etc/alternatives/xdvi.bin is correctly pointing to /usr/bin/xdvi-
xaw.bin

in my opinion this is just really a big in the install script.
/usr/sbin/xdvi-xaw.bin is here and working (it is what was invoked by the
xdvi command before this upgrade). The only problem is the symlink in the
alternative

I'm unable to reproduce this. The symbolic link and alternative works
ok, if a little ugly. I doubt this is Ubuntu-specific if it really is a
bug. The only Ubuntu changes in texlive-bin 2007 are libpoppler and
kpathsea changes.
Can anybody else reproduce this?
