I had a similar issue today.
I was using the phone to listen to music with headphones (walking to
work, just to set the scene).
I unplugged the headphones when I reached the office, did my usual pre-
work faff of making a cup of tea etc. When I went to use the device the
screen would turn on but
The part where it "wouldn't respond to taps" suggests there something
more than just the edges going awry.

This happened again last night. I locked the screen, put the phone in my
pocket and then after a while tried to use the phone. The screen was
'frozen' on the 'swipe to unlock' screen and did not repsond to edge
gestures. I then held the power button and got the 'Power off Reboot
Cancel' dialog, but
haven't had any sightings on krillin, but might be worth "trying"
