Apparently this line
gpio &= GPIO_ST_OUTPUT_ENABLE;
Should be
gpio |= GPIO_ST_OUTPUT_ENABLE;
instead.
Please ask the author to send the patch to upstream Linux

Raymond, I've tried muting with pacmd set-sink-mute 1 1 and although it
helps there is still a click. I think it may require muting at a lower
