Using linux-firmware _1.156_all.deb I get a slightly different outcome.
Now when I run "dmesg | grep -i blue" after boot, there are no results.
After I use Gnome's bluetooth settings window to try to connect to a
device, the log contains:

Same results with Pilot6's PPA (0x0408 tx timeout). Although I don't
think his PPA was ever intended to work with the 4.x series kernel.

Installing linux-firmware 1.149.3 got rid of the "Failed to load..."
message, but bluetooth still fails to work. That is, when I try to
connect devices that worked with Tan's firmware, it just times out. In
this case, I see:

Kernel 4.2 supports this adapter by itself.

I've upgraded to a 4.2.0 kernel, Bluetooth isn't even recognised now.
The "Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to load rtl_bt/rtl8723b_fw.bin" line in
dmesg looks suspicious, but I have no idea how to fix it.

reinstalling linux-firmware

(RC-s and stable) through 4.2 RC5. Getting kernel panics at seemingly

I know that in 4.1 the driver has been included in mainline kernel.
But 4.2 is not released and is not supported in Ubuntu.

My packages are cleanly removed. Not like github versions. They overwrite
package files and blacklist modules. That's not good.
I can review blacklists manually and also module associations.
To get it clean is better to install a new kernel.

Unfortunately it's still not working. I uninstalled the github versions
by reinstalling the kernel via Synaptic. I then installed the packages
you specified (the 8723BE module is definitely built) and power cycled.
Bluetooth devices cannot be found by Gnome's bluetooth settings.

To get it work you need to install both rtlwifi_new and BT driver from
one place.
If you uninstall both drivers from github and install them from my ppa,
they wll work.
sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms rtl8723au-bt-dkms linux-firmware
You need to make sure that nothing is blackliste
Oh, apparently even that doesn't work. I had to go back and install
rtlwifi_new from source again.

I used the ppa on Ubuntu 14.04.2 Kernel 3.16.0-41 and Blue-tooth works.
I also have Ubuntu 15.04 Kernel 3.19.0-20 on another partition and it
works on it too.
I updated my ppa for vivid. Changed module version. But I get feedbacks
that it worked without that.

Yes linux-firmware has been installed from your PPA.
But the log says that the board do not need the firmware to be uploaded
in the board which is weird because in 3.13 the firmware was uploaded.

Did you also install linux-firmware from my ppa. Firmware for bluetooth has
been added to 1.144 that is in Ubuntu 15.10.
Without the firmware it will not work. I made a separate package for
bt-firmware but it will conflict with nwe linux-firmware, that has same files.

I built a dkms module based on lwfinger. It it will install on new kernels.
Install it by

I'm using Utopics default kernel and I also got wifi working with

with lwfinger's rtl8723au_bt. But when bluetooth is enabled, wifi is not
working very well (unless the signals is very good, the connection
becomes slow and unresp

but I'm not surprised as the realtek support has not been pushed in
mainline kernel and I doubt that Ubuntu kernel devs would patch that
sort of thing.
