Unfortunately, the workaround does not anymore work in LTS Ubuntu 16.04
if you use an international keyboard with dead keys (and perhaps in
other circumstances).

This actually even seems to improve autokey-gtk performance in Ubuntu
14.04. For example, I was loosing characters when auto-keying into
Gmail. After disabling ibus, like this:
Settings > Language Support > Language tab > Keyboard input method
