When I installed chromium, I did so with two other packages:
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
pepperflashplugin-nonfree

It may be a coincidence that Ubuntu 14.04 locked up the two times I
repeated the steps outlined in this report.
