After the kernel update to 3.16.0-28-generic, I've removed the
modification to test and it appears that the problem was solved for me.

I KNEW IT! It HAD something to do with systemd! After endless attempts,
I've tried to modify /etc/default/grub to look like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash init=/lib/systemd/systemd"
I was really getting mad but now I can shutdown again and I'm very
happy! :D

You know, that bisecting thing is too complicated for me, really. My
computer skills are very limited and I'm not a tech guy. The last
working kernel was 3.13.0-x, which I've used in totally updated Trusty
until October 29th, when I've upgraded to Utopic. Every kernel after
3.16.0-x (including the

kernel to 3.16 in order to identify the last good kernel commit,
followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more

Tested with the uptsream kernel 3.18-rc6-vivid. Same result. It hangs at
shutdown, displaying the message "wait-for-state stop/waiting"
