Same problem with Installation from a USB (runs
ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso; made bootable by rufus-2.10).

I am hesitant to let the "Erase disk and install ubuntu" option take
effect, as I have a second hard drive that installed that I absolutely
do not want to be erased.

Got right in the same situation when installing G-Ubuntu no my X1 Yoga.
The solution is a mix of all this : i ended up doing a "normal" install without
modifying the partition map, that worked.
I then re-in
