I used OSS 1.2.10 for output. If I switch to ALSA 1.2.10 I can in
fact play the two files simultaneously (and hear both).

Ok, glad to know you solve your problem, but since it wasn't really a
bug but a misconfiguration, i'm closing this bug as invalid. Feel free
to report any future bug you may find.

If I do this:
1. switch to OSS as output in XMMS and then close it
2. launch totem with some song (which starts to play)
3. launch XMMS
Then I get a much better experience because XMMS actually displays an
error message telling me Please check that no other program is blocking
the soundcard.
OSS doens't support multiple streams, that's among other things why alsa
is the default in linux, the oss is present just for backwards
compatibility.

But adding an understandable error message will still help the end-
users. OSS will probably be around for a while longer (albeit as a
backup/legacy package).
