that clear. It is only a grub issue.

I believe I found the problem. The "magic" groot option in
/boot/grub/menu.lst was setting root to the wrong volume, which worked
for awhile because I had a recent installation in that volume.

I have done an "aptitude full-upgrade" (new name for dist-upgrade) once
several updates ago, which I guess caused the problem. However, the man
page for aptitude isn't very clear that it shouldn't be used for normal
package updating. Perhaps it should be more explicit.

Afaik dist-upgrade ignores kept back option and should be only use for
upgrade between two distributions (Feisty -> Gutsy) or something like
that.

I had possibly the same problem. I did aptitude update and aptitude
dist-upgrade today.
Grub didn't display menu and gave me the command line.
booting to 2.6.22-11 kernel and dpkg-reconfigure cryptsetup fixed this for me

It seems that Synaptic is the problem. It doesn't kept packages back
like apt-get or the Update Manager. I would recommend for the future to
use apt-get upgrade or the Update Notification in tray.

This is my apt-get upgrade output with current Gutsy and the linux-
image-generic is the 2.6.22.12.14 .

What is the missing dependency? I want to track this down, maybe there

I didn't force anything. I used synaptic to reload, checked all
updates, and installed. That's it. There were no warnings or extra
dialogs to go through.

I think this is no bug since apt-get kept this kernel back because of a
missing dependency. I guess that you have forced apt to install it so it
is no Gutsy problem.
