Hi Jerry,
Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD -
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. If the issue still exists, can you
please attach an updated dmesg output when running Intrepid. Thanks in
Alpha 3 Intrepid Ibex as updated does not have this problem. Network
Manager does activate the ethernet adapter shortly after boot.
Bug #83143 is a duplicate, and I've commented that one as fixed also, on
Intrepid Ibex

I installed and checked Hardy Heron release level on Ubuntu, Kubuntu,
and Xubuntu. This problem still occurs on all three, just like it was
documented at the top of the bug.
During boot, the network is activated, then the Network Manager
programmer (debian?) decides the ethernet adapter won't
Same problem, but I'm testing Gutsy server, so I don't have the nice
graphical network tool to fix the problem.
Interestingly, I tried a complete reinstall, and the network worked
during installation and then failed on the first boot.

Here's syslog from installed Gutsy Tribe 5 Ubuntu as updated on about
20070922 where network was not configured at boot, but manually
selecting network icon and selecting wired network work.
Boot should have been able to configure network as it does on Gutsy Tribe 5
