While I was preparing to update bios I noticed that there were 2 settings for touchpad in the bios menus. Mine  was set to advanced so I set it to the first option and booted. The touchpad now works.  You have my apologies for the incorrect bug report. jim clawson On Saturday, May 2,

beethoven, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (1.10). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?
