I have now upgraded this PC to Hardy 8.4.1. Unfortunately the nvidia
driver will not even load in Hardy. This is the same bug I have on my
home PC when I upgraded that to Hardy.
IE when you click to install the proprietary nvidia driver, it installs
the packages and aks to reboot. After reboot I

1. Install latest version of nvidia driver (I'm using v173.14.09, installed
with EnvyNG)
2. sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

As a result of the newer driver, this is fixed in Hardy.
I'd suggest bumping up to Hardy if you can. It is unfortunate that
Ubuntu can't allow showstopper bugs such as this one to be patched mid
release.

Let me make this clear:
As with many things -- this is _not_ a Linux problem but rather a
_vendor_ problem.
If you own one of these cards, please take the time to send a letter to
NVidia asking them to open their cards up via sample code or
documentation in the same manner that AMD has committed

have had 3 months of no response from developers. Then told it wont be
fixed in Gutsy, and now told its 'not our problem, go and complain to
nVidia'. This is hardly kind to Ubuntu's long suffering users.

@Milos I think this bug applies to any dual core machines, with an ever
increasing range of nVidia cards (I am using 32 bit Gutsy bit too).
After waiting patiently for 3 months, we have been told this will not be
fixed in Gutsy and we will have to wait for Hardy, but so far it seems
this has bugs

disable a core (kernel boot up parameter)
downgrade drivers (to Feisty)
switch to nv (unrestricted open source driver, but with no 3D acceleration)

It would be interesting to try the new restricted driver in Hardy using
a live CD. But I dont know how to do this as the OS seems to require an
actual reboot, rather than a restart of X to use the restricted driver,
which you cant do on a live CD of course.

I have the same problem here. I have Intel Core2Duo E6550, 2x1GB of RAM and
Gainward 7600GT SilentFX PCI-x video card. First when I had drivers from Gutsy
repos, the freez was not complite (I could move my mouse cursor), but when I
installed 169.09 drivers with envy, I had a complite freezes. I

I disabled the Nvidia driver and are now running the driver that comes
with Ubuntu. It works, but very slow and with no effects whatsoever. But
rather that than random crashes every 5-10 min.

You could always download the driver from NVidia, and build it locally.
I've done that with Hardy until quite recently, as an example, and it is
quite straightforward.

Thanks! That did indeed work but yet again my video playback no longer
works. Hopefully I won't have the funky lag/lockups like I did

processor. I tried installing 169.04 but I couldn't get it to work.
It would complain about no valid screens and X wouldn't load. Before I

I've tried all the old drivers and the new beta and still had lockups.
I noticed that one of my network cards would die when it happened.
/proc/interrupts showed nvidia and eth1 sharing the same IRQ. Since
moving the NIC to another slot it hasn't locked up yet (several days
now).

All right, then, after trying different ways out from this bug I did
install the new beta x86_64-169.04.
It's too early to say how it's doing, but it's smooth for now. I'd also
bet that 100.14.09 would do the trick as well as It was working fine
before Gutsy became release and added 100.14.19.
12 hours are gone and no lockups so far with 169.04. There are other
positive reports on ubuntu forums.

Thanks for the suggestion Troy. After trying this I was only able to
get about six hours of use before Xorg locked up.
I'm not sure this issue is specific to the 7000 series nvidias since I
swapped the card out with a Quadro FX 1400 and that too froze.

Your best bet currently is to remove _all_ instances of the newer
drivers from your system and install the 14.9 version.
The trickiest part of this will be to remove all traces of the other

hi i also have had lots of freezes lockups especially with nvidia driver
in xorg.conf, it i change it to nv it works better, but stil the lockups
and freezes come occasionally. so does this mean it's not just the
nvidia-glx driver that's got a bug but also the nv one also...??
