Building the latest mplayer from the trunk seemed to work fine with the
default dvdnav libs in Intrepid. I do agree dvdnav support should be
built into the Ubuntu mplayer.

It looks like mplayer depends on their own fork of libdvdnav:
http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/dvdnav/trunk/libdvdnav/
Theirs differs significantly from the one in Gutsy (presumably from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvd/, last updated in 2004).

Same problem.
Installing libdvdnav4 didn't help me (too). Same thing in all mplayer packages
(-nogui, gnome-mplayer and so on).

I have the same problem.
Maybe mplayer package upgrade to rc2 would help - it includes forked version of
libdvdnav
