The issue was resolved after removing the gtk-qt-engine. Don't think I
reinstalled that package again.
So did not have any problems after that.

I was having the same issue. After opening appearance-preferences, the
cpu usage spiked to 100% and I could not select/click on anything in the
window except to close the applet. Also got this

commented about their issues which are different there already, you
should better open a new bug if you figure a way to trigger the issue or

I tried to move .gtk_qt_engine_rc and .gtkrc-2.0 to a tmp directory, logged
out, gdm restart, logged in and same problem...

I have this bug but removing that package doesn't work I receive this:

The effect of my problem is that the application starts, but you cannot
do anything with it except close it.
You can go directly to some pages, with --show-page=effects for example,
but then it only presents you with something to click on and then blank
