No news on this bug. It only happens with the 64Bit Version of Gutsy.
It's not related to Kubuntu - Ubuntu has the same problems.

i have the same hardware, and i've also experience the same problem. I
use the safe recovery option and get's me around the issue. I've also
checked the /etc/usplash.conf file, and manually corrected the
resolution but that didn't help.
