Sorry, mate. After a few frustrated weeks I did a clean install of 8.04
64-bit version and no longer not suffer from the problem.

I can confirm this as well. Ubuntu 8.04 with latest updates as of this
comment. Same steps as Chris. Please let me know if you'd like the crash

I can confirm this bug on Hardy. I opened gimp, created a new image and
choose to the save the image. while typing the file name gimp crashes.
