You may want to consider using a repository with a more recent version
of qgis, eg the one of ubuntugis:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable
sudo apt-get update
#If you already have qgis installed:
sudo apt-get upgrade
#If you don't already have it:
sudo apt-get i
Apparently the transparency information is also not stored in the style
file. Setting the default style only applies the style when the same
image is imported again, but not to other images, which is pointless.
