I have tried a bunch of times to reproduce this bug now, without
success. I landed a bunch of stability fixes to the code that manages
the top indicator icons in version 0.5.3+15.10.20150818-0ubuntu1, so
it's possible that this issue is resolved, though.

I am also seeing that when wifi is disabled the indicator does not
always update to show the cellular data connection whereas the panel
does show it as it has been enabled all along.

Here's my description from the private bug:
While testing the latest version of NM from silo-006, I noticed that
when I enable WiFi and it autoconnects to my home AP, although the NM
menu shows the AP as connected ( it's green ), the panel icon sometimes
can take several minutes to switch to show
