Public bug reported:

Every other week I can no longer start thunderbird, because another instance is 
already running (although no application window is listed in gnome-shell). The 
following error is shown:
"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, 
you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system."

Forever whatever reason gnome-shell keeps a reference to the thunderbird
child process:
