There is a known issue with openoffice.org and broken gtk-themes.
It rather seems OOo is broken and only some themes trigger it (according to the
upstream bug report's title).

OK, that workaround is good for me, I was using the Crux theme. Set it
back to human and Impress is launching OK now.

Are you using a non-ubuntu packaged gtk-theme (e.g. from gnome-look.org)
or the Crux-theme? If so, please change the theme to e.g. clearlooks or
human and try to reproduce the bug. There is a known issue with
openoffice.org and broken gtk-themes.

Intel Centrino Duo with 1GB. Can't post debug output that the moment but
