I have just been confirmed of my own stupidity... It seems that the only reason
Banshee couldn't play the songs in the library was because I had moved them to
another location. D'oh!

the command line and see if there's any output?

It appears now that Banshee plays .ogg files fine, but fails when
playing .mp3's. Lack of codecs? I have the gstreamer restricted stuff
from the repos!
