As a matter of fact I discovered that kernel 3.13.0-61 was not the
reason to make it work again, at least not the kernel itself. After
rebooting the running kernel was still 3.13.0-62. But this time the HDMI
worked. Maybe the process of installing had a certain side effect. I

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04 and a Toshiba Satellite
laptop. The HDMI output just disappeared from the xrandr command's
output after updating Ubuntu.
Here it is the xrandr output:
