Seems ok now, though I had other stability and speed problems, so the
workaround I used in the end was VMWare player, which works great.

You can use qcow images and ignore qcow2. Or, the packages from hardy
contain the patch that fixes this bug, and feisty isn't affected because
qcow2 wasn't implemented yet, so you could either upgrade or downgrade.
