Hello,
I also own an ATI Radeon 8500. I had the same kind of bugs with compiz
enabled in Feisty and Gutsy. Everything was solved when I changed my CRT

Oh, you're right, I had your bug confused with another one. Reassigning
to the ati driver, compiz doesn't do anything that would cause those
weird defects.

Right, the problem is we should not be allowing compiz to run on your

This seems to have been fixed, at least to some extension, in the final release.
Now if I use 'SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz --replace', compiz throws the same errors,
but starts ok. I still need to unload / reload radeon, and manually edit
xorg.conf for 16bpp.

Altough I couldn't get desktop-effects to run at first (due to
_unrelated_ Bug #123712 and Bug #123712), I managed to get it to start
after:
-- manually changing xorg.conf DefaultDepth to 16 (it's a pitty
displayconfig-gtk doesn't allow to change bitdepth);
-- unloading and loading radeon module
Please be advised that i also have this bug (don't know if it(s
