I tried Ubuntu 8.10 Beta live CD. I saw the flickering of the turning
wheel during start up. I guess the problem won't be solved with 8.10 :(

I have forced the system to use i810 driver by adding the line Driver
"i810" to the Devices section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Now my system
works as expected. The same hack had worked for gutsy as well. (See my
post submitted on 2007-11-01 above for the changes after using this
driver.)
As far a
Ubuntu 8.04 Beta Release with all updates applied as of March 25th.

Note: This is not my first post for this bug entry. I had similar
problems with 7.10 on the same machine. Using i810 driver
all that is obsolete, updates solved it !

There are some observations I'd like to mention:
1. I have noticed that the "turned off twice" behavior is not related with this
but. It happens on my desktop pc as well.
2. Just before the login windows is displayed (i.e. ,I think, while gdm is
loading), the pointer is shown as a turning wheel (
i still get the strange "turned off twice" behaviour, but the initial issue is
OK since ubuntu9 version of the intel driver.
Shutdown is successful everytime now for me.

I have the same problem. My laptop is Toshiba Satellite L10-102 :
Pentium M 1.60 Ghz, 256+512 MB RAM (originally 256 MB), on board intel
graphics card, intel pro 2200bg wifi chip. Occasionally, as soon as I
press the shutdown button on Kubuntu or Ubuntu, I get a black screen
(monitor turned off),
(my Gutsy is a new install, not an upgrade.)
