It turned out to be a hardware bug which was fixed in the latest BIOS update
from Lenovo.

Thanks for the update Ani. Per you last comment that this appears to be
fixed against the 2.6.24-1.2 kernel, I'm going to mark this as "Fix
Released" for the current development kernel. However, against linux-
source-2.6.22 this bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release
update and will
upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-1.2 also seems to have fixed the problem
