I guess the driver issue is a duplicate of Bug #123170 and the compiz one is a
duplicate of Bug #130933.
The driver problem should be fixed in Hardy Alpha 6 and later.

Sounds like the intel driver has enabled the VGA output even if you
don't have something hooked up to it. That would cause you to have two
outputs, one the size of these maximized windows you're seeing and one
your actual screen size.
