Good point. I just now uploaded the patch from comment #7 (with
changelog tweaks) to trusty-proposed. Now it just has to get approved
and go through the SRU process.

I wanted to see if this is going to be back ported to trusty or wily
like Andrew asked?
I'm currently hitting this problem and Xenial MAAS is still beta so I
need to use MAAS 1.9.0 but it fails to install on wily or trusty because
of the issue in this bug.

Resolving this by cherry picking check on uid, and also allowing EACCES failure
due to username space.
The cherry pick could be dropped if we were to rebase on debian dev version
(tgt_1.0.61).

The attachment "tgt_fix_lp1518440.diff" seems to be a debdiff. The
ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they
can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a
patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the
"patch" tag,
