Will you use "firewall-config" (I may have the name slightly wrong, or
this may be an old one as I can't find it any more...) as the GUI for
firewalld? Because that doesn't offer you all the options that the
command-line version does. So perhaps you could make a built-in GUI
which will work with an

we may at some point switch to firewalld, since it allows setting
firewall zones for networks in gnome-control-center. Unfortunately
though it still requires a seperate UI app for actually editing the
zones, and this app is probably not as simple as gufw it.
