Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

If you:

1) Log in as user A
2) Switch to user B and log in
3) Switch back to A
4) Log out A and then log back in as A
5) Switch back to B
6) Switch back to A

then you get a black screen. This occurs because when user A logs out
and in, it changes the virtual terminal. The applet in user B does not
seem to notice this change however, and after switching to user B and
back, the applet attempts to switch you to the old virtual terminal. You
can generally recover from the black screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt and
guessing one of F7, F8, F9, etc.

This occurred for me with gutsy.
