Not intentionally. The efi partition has to be HFS+ for ubuntu to get
installed on my mac book. If there is way to reformat the partition to
R/W I can do that, I am unaware of how to properly back up the /boot/efi
so that my system won't become unusable.

Could it be because the /boot/efi is HFS+ formatted and mounted as read
only ? I tried re doing the same thing but there is no mention of grub-
efi in syslog. If it is because of HFS+ formatting is there any work
around to get this working ?

I believe your efi system partition is corrupt. You could confirm this
by checking /var/log/syslog for more detailed errors at the time this
happened, and can fix it by unmounting it and running dosfsck on it.
