This bug looks like it is fixed in 24.04. Tested with
xubuntu-24.04-minimal-amd64.iso, sudo apt install gwenview, and then
running "gwenview ." works and allows me to browse directories.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to

Ubuntu 15.04 (vivid) reached end-of-life on February 4, 2016.
I'm setting the status of this bug to 'Incomplete'
With a new install of 16.04, the workaround: 'sudo apt-get install kinit kio
kio-extras kded5 kinfocenter' helped.
One should really check the missing dependencies.

On a new install of Linux Mint 18 XFCE 64bit:
sudo apt-get install kio kinit kdelibs-bin kded5
didn't solve the issue, but
sudo apt-get install kinfocenter
did. When kinfocenter is installed an array of dependencies is installed
that takes care of the bug.

running Xenial, and I just opened gwenview and got the exact same
message the bug describes:
URL cannot be listed file:///home/
After installing what the description suggest:
sudo apt-get install kio kinit kdelibs-bin kded5
