Maybe related (?): the text is not vertically centered inside
TextFields. Attaching a screenshot of the toolkit gallery that
demonstrates this, and another screenshot of the browser, where this is
even more visible because the fontSize is set to small.

Yes, I noticed the same that the colors in denial somehow are screwed.
There has to be something with Qt 5.5.1 again which causes the issue.

I’m guessing this is on desktop xenial, right?
On my wily setup, the text on tabs looks much more readable, even though not as
high contrast as chrome. See attached screenshot.

Could it be a more general text rendering issue with the UITK on xenial?
The widget that’s used to draw the text on tabs is defined here:

Its size is set to "small", and its color is not
