I solved in this way:
1) press Ctrl+Shift+J once for full screen;
2) press Ctrl+Shift+J another time to get normal windows with decoration (for
me, I hope for you too).

I also have this problem on Gutsy / AMD64 / Nvidia / Compiz + Beryl...
OpenOffice 2.3 doesn't seem to be contained in window manager - full
screen no borders... and clicking on a menu makes the screen flicker
and the menu deactivate...

I don't know if it is somehow related, but some windows (e.g.:
confirmations and customize box) keep showing in full screen and cannot
be resized. Any clue?

today there is another update from gutsy proposed
i will try and see what happens
however i don't think i will keep using xgl
