I've successfully resolved this issue. It seems to be a common problem,
listed on the ubuntuguide for gutsy gibbon.

However, if I pull up the console during boot (Ctrl+Alt+F2) then it seems to
boot at "normal speed". I have not had time to do much testing to try to figure
out what's going on
