Closing, since 1) it's not reproducible locally, 2) it has been resolved
upstream, and 3) the original reporter has not been able to test an 8.10
desktop image.

honestly, haven't tried. I might throw 8.10 on the laptop someday, but

thats worked to me too, when a boot on vista the sounds stops working,
but doing your procedure all back to work again.

Another forum gave me an idea. I dual boot from Vista, but if I
shutdown, then unplug the power cord, boot to Kubuntu, then plug the
cord back in, the sound **seems** to work. I've only reproduced this
twice so I'm not ready to call it a "workaround" but it does seem to
have merit. The reasoning
