Hi, Unsetting "Use hardware acceleration" seems to fix the problem. I started Chromium from the commandline using a switch to disable acceleration. Even going into the menu would trigger the problem. There was no crash, as such. The display just didn't work. Does this change your approach? Than

In Version: 51.0.2704.79-0ubuntu0.14.04.1.1121 I must disable hardware acceleration in Chrome otherwise the screen blanks (no backlight, no panel sync) when opening the settings menu. This problem occurred after the latest update from Mint (stable). Switching tty doesn't restore the display state.
