My apologies for the messy addition above.
The problem is manifest in the main "desktop" portion of the Ubuntu experience
but during the boot process, the screen resolution appears much higher for the
Ubuntu logo.
I will try uninstalling the Nvidia driver.

Thanks. I was unsure. I could only have called it Ubuntu. I will look
into the link you sent.
I am really hoping to explore Ubuntu after hearing so much about it.
50hz is very hard to bear though.
