Fabio just admitted he's using ubuntu-app-launch and /separately/ has
also reported that his unity-scope-click is invisible (but installed) ->

this may or may not be useful info for debug, just sharing.
I've been helping someone get setup.
I helped them install the unity-scope-click, which took care of the problem.
however, while debugging another issue we discovered they had an odd version of
ubuntu-app-launch (likely from an old silo),

I don't know why unity-scope-click got uninstalled, I'm pretty sure I
had it at some point (I remember wondering what it was)… Maybe during
the 16.04 update?
Anyway it was indeed the problem! I'll give Unity8 another go when I'm
able to launch apps!

They are simply not installed - you can get the Apps scope by installing
unity-scope-click, the rest you should then be able to install from the
store, provided they are built for your architecture.
