Please open a new bug for the slow scrolling. It sounds like an
acceleration (EXA or XAA) issue, or maybe you are using compiz.

I cannot follow up this bug in Gutsy, since I have upgraded to Hardy
beta.
In Hardy, after the xorg.conf modification (Virtual 1400 1400 in the
"display" subsection) the rotation works.
However, scrolling or switching to another window (alt+tab) is painfully
slow now. To draw a small terminal win
Actually for rotation the virtual size should be 1400x1400.

This does not fully work. After changing the xorg.conf, I could rotate
first, but the result was awfully slow and garbled. (see screenshot).
After a reboot xrandr -o left does not work anymore, but it also does
not freeze. It just does nothing.

man xorg.conf :)
You should add:
Virtual 1400 1050
to the display subsection.

xrandr -o left (or rotating left with the grandr applet) freezes the X
server but not the system. Music plays on, for instance, but only a hard
reset can bring the system into a working state again.
What line exactly should I add to xorg.conf?

xorg.conf is not automatically created by the driver, it works without
one. You can generate one with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-
xorg".
What exactly is the xrandr command that freezes the system?
Does it help if you follow this hint:
(II) RADEON(0): Max desktop size set to 2048x1200
After deleting the xorg.conf, xorg.conf does not seem to get
automatically recreated.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

I suspect this has to do with the resolution of 1400x1050. On the
console I once got a message like "bigger than the maximum size", and I
have seen other people report problems with 1400x1050 resolutions.
