Yes, in 8.10 sound still does not work out of the box for the Dell Inspiron
9400. I haven't tested whether the fix mentioned above works for 8.10 as
well. Someone please check as I am currently using 8.04.

I have resolved it on my system by reinstalling kernel modules and
reinstalling alsa as described in comprehencive sound guide in the WIKI.

Yup, same problem. Sound worked in Vista, but doesn't in Gutsy. I have a
new Dell Inspiron 1720.
