clean xubuntu hardy install on a t60 laptop, running ati drivers (from
envy) in big desktop with an external monitor to the right of the laptop
screen, resolutions are 1280x800 on laptop and 1920x1200 on external,
behavior is exactly as described by matthew w

I also am experiencing this problem, with a fresh install of Gutsy.
If a panel is on the left or top of the primary screen (Window 0)
maximizing an app works as expected. If the panel is to the right or at
the bottom of the screen, the app maximizes underneath it, as if
whatever is calculating the

I think one solution would be to place the panel to the left side of the
left display, but I don't know how to move panels that way. On the other
hand, panel in the middle of desktop is faster to reach. Maybe it would
be good to have an option to have panel(s) on both displays.

This might be connected to the bug: On the other display, after
maximizing a window, the window does not reach to the left end of
display.
I have experience of the problems only when using xranrd 1.2 with intel
driver in Gutsy.

The difference between this and #158172 is that in this bug window does
maximize under existing panel, but in #158172 you can not move the
window to the edge of a display even if there is no panel there.
