I tried to do a bisect but I think it went bad at some point.
In any case, I see (#1580114) that the i915 driver was backported from
4.6-rc7 in 4.4.0-24. I'm currently testing 4.4.0-28, but so far it
haven't shown this error.

The issue started after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04. Previously I
believe I used 01.org drivers on top of the 14.04 kernel, and I don't
remember if it worked out of the box or not.
I'll try the mainline kernel.
