Fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 seemed to be fine on a machine with XP on 1st partition of single HDD box. On re-boot my PC did not show any Grub menu and happily booted into XP, clearly using NTLDR. Thanks for taking time report this bug. This seems a strange issue. First the grub error 17 means that you are using an unknown filesystem type for your boot partition. What is the output of `fdisk -l`? Linux partitions don't need to be setted to boot so when you say "The second time I tried ins

Since sending this, the tech person at our university I asked to fixed the windows MBR told me that that was irrecoverable as well. I didn't oversee his work, so I'm not sure how thorough the review was or if he missed anything. But it certainly wasn't obviously repairable. -- Ubiquity causes MBR
