I'm marking this as duplicate of bug 188579, because it's very likely that a
wrong kernel image (without modules) got pulled in.
You can fix it, by removing the -386 kernel image and installing
virtualbox-os
Are you sure that you only installed virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-14-generic
and not switched to e.g. the generic kernel in general in this process?
I'm asking, because it looks like you've been using the -386 kernel flavor
before and now switched to the -generic one.

I did a very stupid thing but it worked. I copied the directory with the
firmwares:
sudo cp -r /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-386
/lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic
Now it works. The problem was, that the driver couldn't find the
appropriate firmware "ipw2200-bss.fw", which was in the /lib
