I wanted to install smartmontools under Intrepid tody, but I rather take
the risk than installing another MTA that I don't want and don't need.
Hope that gets fixed for 9.04 and I agree that smartmontools should
nowadays be installed by default and something like smart-notifier would

netbook in relation to the bug #59695 and I certainly do not want to
have a mail demon installed.

With the new recommends-by-default spec for Hardy this is a bug.
Smartmontools can (and usually is in my experience), executed for live
stats and not as a daemon. The reasoning that mail alerts offers
additional functionality should make mailx a "suggests" rather than a
"recommends".

I agree with all of the previous comments that Recommends should be
moved to Suggests, and categorically disagree with Daniel T Chen's
decision to mark this as Won't Fix.
PLEASE RE-OPEN AND *FIX* THIS DEFECT, rather than quietly closing it
without addressing community demands.

I'd agree if apt wouldn't automatically install recommended packages.
Mailx is best to put where the lesser number of users have to get active
(remove vs. install) but maybe this should be discussed on a mailing
list instead of here.
