same behaviour here, kde4 becomes unusable after some time running xgl.
somebody with the newest ati driver should try it (that driver leaves a
lot of artifacts on the screen with my ATI Xpress 1100, so I'm not going
to reinstall that crap).

Same here, it is manageable with standard Kubuntu KDE3 but uses a
shitload of memory together with KDE4/kwin4 and Composite extensions.
500MB memory size within a couple of hours doing mostly console stuff.
