Booting with option irqpoll works well on gutsy with linux 2.6.22.
On hardy booting with irqpoll the system become almost unusable. The mouse is
unresponsive, but works well with a big workload (seems related with dynamic
tick).
Booting without irqpoll the sound doesn't works and neither the usb

One thing to check when running the newer Hardy release is that all
sound levels are unmuted and turned up. Hardy has ALSA version 1.0.16
which mutes some sound levels by default. If the issue still persists,
care to run the alsa-info.sh script described in the Automatic Sound

The following works for gutsy:
Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst as root
look the line that starts with:
# defoptions=
Append irqpoll to the end

If you are running Gutsy, please also try installing the linux-
backports-modules package which has an updated version of ALSA.
If you are running Hardy, the linux-ubuntu-modules package will have the
updated version of ALSA.

I keep running ubuntu with irqpoll since edgy, but now the system became
unresponsive so it's not an option.
