Looks fixed with OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 on Mint 10 (and presumably Ubuntu
Maverick). I can save password-protected .doc and .xls files and open
them.

No alternative approach is good enough if you need to exchange password-
protected Word documents with colleagues. This bug *must* be solved in
order to keep OpenOffice growing. In my situation, only workaround is
wine/Word.

Till the bug is fixed, you could rather use "gpg -c filename" or zip
protect your doc, or export as pdf and then protect it.

I'm with everyone else on this issue, please fix it ASAP. Its a big turn
off for me and is the one feature that is keeping me from using OO as my
main word processor.

I cannot say emphatically enough how upsetting it is to have to
intermittently exit openoffice, and revert to "Word," in order that I
can create a word-97 encrypted doc file that I am required to create!!!
I gather a decision was made to allow decryption, but not encryption of
word-97 files, becaus
For a work-around, send the .doc file to a compressed (zipped) folder
(right click, send to, compressed (zipped) folder); then password
protect the zipped folder (right click, explore, file, add a password.)
